Chinese, Japanese & South East Asian Art at Roseberys, London

Over 700 lots spanning many epochs and categories of Asian Art, from Chinese archaic bronzes to Japanese prints and Singaporean Modern art, will go under the hammer at Roseberys this autumn. Leading the Chinese, Japanese & South East Asian Art sale on November 11 is a hanging scroll by one of China’s most important artists, Bada Shanren, and two rare archaic bronzes from the extensive van Daalen Collection.

Late Shang dynasty, the deep bowl cast with a band of raised bosses and taotie masks interspersed with archaistic dragons, the body decorated with protruding studs enclosed within a diamond trellis ground of elongated leiwen-pattern, the splayed foot decorated with two taotie masks on a leiwen ground, 16.5cm high, 25.4cm diameter. Bada Shanren’s Hanging Scroll
Bada Shanren (c.1626-1705), also known as Zhu Da, was born in the Jiangxi province of China into the illustrious Ming dynasty but later fled, after the dynasty fell, to a monastery where he became a Buddhist monk. He is regarded as one of the greatest painters of all time, credited with invigorating Chinese painting and inspiring future generations of ‘eccentric’ and ‘individualist’ artists. The stone of grey tone with black inclusions, skillfully used to delineate a musician carved in low relief depicted holding a stick in his right hand with which he beats a drum, and a rattle in his left hand, wearing a long scarf which trails around him, the sides chamfered to a flat base with four pairs of holes for attachment, 4.7cm x 4.7cm.
