AUCTION 1155 - MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART - EVENING SALE | 19 JUNE

Left: Lyonel Feininger - Stilleben auf blauem Tisch, 1911; Right: Max Slevogt - Crevetten auf Eis, 1913

Lyonel Feininger - Stilleben auf blauem Tisch, 1911
Oil on canvas 55 x 75 cm Framed under glass. Signed 'Feininger' in brown lower margin. The individual objects in this significant early still life by Lyonel Feininger are characterised like organisms: thus the oil lamp - with its distinctive form - seems to be filled with a life of its own, the placement of the cups is quite unorthodox and the oranges roll round the wide-bellied jug with a wooden handle in the ceramic bowl. See Price Estimate...

Max Slevogt - Crevetten auf Eis, 1913
Oil on wooden panel 49.5 x 61 cm Framed. Signed and dated 'Slevogt 1913' in black lower right. Max Slevogt's extraordinary talent for observation and his masterful engagement with paint as material culminate in this opulent still life. See Price Estimate...

Left: Lesser Ury - Allee im Tiergarten, Berlin, 1920s; Right: Christian Rohlfs - Weg im Weimarer Park, circa 1890

Lesser Ury - Allee im Tiergarten, Berlin, 1920s
Pastel on card 35 x 49.5 cm Framed under glass. Signed 'L. Ury' in black lower left. - In fine condition with vibrant colours. A minute loss of colour and weak rubbing in the lateral margins. In this light-filled depiction of a road set between the trees, Lesser Ury has developed his own very distinctive use of Impressionistic colour. The modest selection of this typical Berlin motif has enabled him to clearly as well as suggestively divide his sheet up into expansive surfaces. See Price Estimate...

Christian Rohlfs - Weg im Weimarer Park, circa 1890
Oil on canvas 76 x 91 cm Framed. Signed 'Rohlfs' in red brown lower right. “Weg im Weimarer Park” is entirely dedicated to light and its effect on the objective world. The limitation of the painter's palette to these almost metallic tones is supplemented by a few red and reddish-brown accents which form the cracked textures of the tree trunks and branches and bring out details in the three strolling figures. See Price Estimate...

Left: Paula Modersohn-Becker - Kinder zwischen Birkenstämmen, 1904; Right: Otto Modersohn - Herbst am Moorkanal. Verso: Louise Modersohn-Breling im grünen Kleid, 1923/1913

Paula Modersohn-Becker - Kinder zwischen Birkenstämmen, 1904
Oil on card, laid down on wooden panel 69.5 x 51 cm Framed. Dated '04' in red lower right. It was Paula Modersohn-Becker's mother in Bremen who owned the present painting, which Gustav Pauli still listed under the title “Kinder unter Birken”. In the layout of the composition, in the selected colours and in the simplifications of its visual indications, it provides an exemplary summation of the elements of her developing personal style. See Price Estimate...

Otto Modersohn - Herbst am Moorkanal. Verso: Louise Modersohn-Breling im grünen Kleid, 1923/1913
Oil on canvas 74 x 90 cm resp. 73 x 92 cm Framed on both sides. Signed 'OModersohn' (joined) in reddish brown lower left, remnants of a crossed out signature to the right as well as signed verso 'O Modersohn' in black lower right. This landscape later painted on the back of the portrait of Louise Modersohn-Breling is captivating in its vitality and expansiveness within its horizontal format - the clear air of the area surrounding Bremen in North Germany almost seems to blow out against us. See Price Estimate...

Left: Max Slevogt - Stehender Schimmel, 1902; Right: Piet Mondrian - Farm building near irrigation ditch with farmer at work and woman doing the laundry, circa 1898-1902

Max Slevogt - Stehender Schimmel, 1902
Oil on card on plywood 65.5 x 65 cm Framed. Signed and dated 'Slevogt 1902' in black lower right. The animal and landscape are captured in rapid, confident strokes. The horse is depicted in strict profile, in keeping with the classic tradition of likenesses of horses, and the surrounding passage of landscape which can be located behind the artist's premises in Neukastel is reduced to a section of pasture sloping upwards slightly and featuring a dark area of shrubbery. See Price Estimate...

Piet Mondrian - Farm building near irrigation ditch with farmer at work and woman doing the laundry, circa 1898-1902
Oil on canvas 54.2 x 36.2 cm Framed. Signed 'Piet Mondriaan.' in red lower right. The depiction of a canal with a farmer and a woman doing laundry represents a discovery. The elongated vertical format is remarkable compositionally, but so is the pictorial expansion of the landscape through the two figures, which are only rarely to be found in Mondrian's work. See Price Estimate...

AUCTION 1156 - MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART - DAY SALE | 20 JUNE

Left: Edward Cucuel - Träumerei (Damenbildnis), circa 1915/1920; Right: Karl Hagemeister - Wellen, circa 1910

Edward Cucuel - Träumerei (Damenbildnis), circa 1915/1920
Oil on canvas 66.5 x 60.5 cm Framed. Signed 'Cucuel' in blue lower right and verso stamped on stretcher 'Edward Cucuel' and with an old paper label inscribed with the artist's name. In this painting, the emphasis is not on the characteristics of the individual person. Far more important is how clothing and setting offer a possibility to display varying textures and surfaces. The folds of the dress follow the brushstrokes and are set at contrasting angles, like those of the star-shaped growth of the green bush in the background. See Price Estimate...

Karl Hagemeister - Wellen, circa 1910
Oil on canvas 76 x 116 cm Framed. Signed 'K.Hagemeister' in black lower right. The element of water is omnipresent in the oeuvre of Karl Hagemeister - whether as calm ponds in the woods or swampy landscapes from rural Brandenburg, light-filled views of Schwielow Lake and the Havel river or the roaring waves of the Baltic Sea, which he captured on the beach at Lohme on Rügen. The power of the turbulent sea and the thundering roll of the waves during stormy weather exerted an unceasing fascination on the painter. See Price Estimate...

Left: André Derain - Chrysanthèmes dans un pot, Circa 1931/32; Right: Hans Purrmann - Stillleben mit Früchten, 1950

André Derain - Chrysanthèmes dans un pot, Circa 1931/32
Oil on canvas, relined 53 x 46.3 cm Framed. Signed 'a Derain' in black lower right. The work presented here featuring the depiction of a small bouquet of chrysanthemums in a clay jug has been reduced to this single subject, which has been placed in the middle of the picture. Derain has concentrated on the natural and simple beauty of the flowers, which are provided with a stage by the golden-brown of the surrounding space. See Price Estimate...

Hans Purrmann - Stillleben mit Früchten, 1950
Oil on fibreboard 47 x 56 cm Framed. Unsigned. - Stamp "Hans Purrmann" verso, therein handwritten archive number. Certificate: According to Robert Purrmann, the painting was done in Montagnola around 1950. The work is registered in the archive under no. 1135. See Price Estimate...

Left: Otto Modersohn - Vorfrühling in Fischerhude (Fischerhuder Häuser mit Graben und Brücke), 1926; Right: Wilhelm Trübner - Balkonzimmer am Starnberger See, 1912

Otto Modersohn - Vorfrühling in Fischerhude (Fischerhuder Häuser mit Graben und Brücke), 1926
Oil on artist's board 57,5 x 73 cm Framed. Signed and dated 'O. Modersohn 26' in dark green lower left. Certificate: With a certificate by Rainer Noeres, Otto Modersohn Museum Fischerhude, dated 20 March 2020. See Price Estimate...

Wilhelm Trübner - Balkonzimmer am Starnberger See, 1912
Oil on canvas 62 x 76 cm Framed. Signed 'W. Trübner' in black lower right. This painting is a fine example of how Trübner turned to impressionism in his late work, while nonetheless retaining his realistic and naturalistic perception of painting. A balcony room, probably in the Villa Goes in Niederpöcking, has been exquisitely depicted here with great attention to detail. See Price Estimate...
