Boris Grigoriev (1886-1939) - У палатки (At the Tent), circa 1913
Highlights of this sale are to include an early gouache by the renowned Russian artist, Boris Grigoriev, titled ‘At the Tent’. This painting originally came from the pre-revolutionary St. Petersburg collection of Alexander Evgenievich Burtsev, and remained with him until the 1917. Burtsev was a Russian bibliophile, bibliographer, publisher, art collector, author of ethnographic works and merchant of the first guild. As an honorary citizen of St. Petersburg, he gathered a large library of rare books and acquired a significant collection of autographs. On top of curating the library, he also arranged exhibitions of his collections and had ambitions to create a museum dedicated to new and innovative Russian art. See Price Estimate...

Claude Venard (1913 - 1999) - Nature Morte à la Cruche, 1955
Oil on canvas, signed and dated 55 lower right, 75 x 75cm. The following lots 24 to 30 are from a collection of the works of Claude Venard that were acquired directly from Arthur Tooths & Sons Ltd., London, and have remained in the same collection since this time. Venard received international acclaim during the 1950s and was championed by the critics André Salmon, and Waldemar George whom described his painting as “Apocalyptic art!" Noe Nesterovich Gedenidze (1914- 2002) - Accountant Practicing, 1959
Oil on canvas, signed and inscribed in Cyrillic on the reverse, 87 x 68cm. Gedenidze was an important artist from the Soviet era, before the War he studied at Tbilisi Academy of Fine Arts, and went onto graduate in 1962 from the Surikov Moscow State Art Institute. Philippe de Rougemont (1891-1965) - Profil d'une femme à la robe bleue

Maria-Mela Muter (1876 - 1967) - Landschaft
Oil on board, signed lower right, 33 x 41cm. Mela Muter, the pseudonym of Maria Melania Mutermilch, is one of the most significant Polish Jewish female painters in Paris in the early 20th century. During the Second World War, Muter went into hiding in the South of France, from this point on she created these Fauvist landscapes of the area, such as the present painting. See Price Estimate...


Vera Rockline (1896-1934) - Jeune femme au collier de perles (young woman with a pearl necklace)
Oil, signed lower right, 41 x 33cm. Rockline was principally admired for her exquisite portrayal of female nudes, referred to by the renowned art critic and journalist, Raymond Escholier, as 'symphonies of flesh'. The prevalence of Cubism in her early work, received via Alexandra Ekster in Kiev, is still apparent in the mask-like quality of the face delineated from her neck and shoulders, reminiscent of the work of Paul Cézanne. However, the impressionistic manner of the overall brushwork evinces the development of her own mature style, regarded by the authoritative magazine, ‘L’Art et les Artistes,’ as an inspired synchronisation between Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Gustave Courbet. Fikret Mualla (1903-1967) - Péniches sur la Seine
Gouache, signed lower right, 34.7 x 55.8. Turkish born Mualla, alongside Abidin Dino, is considered to be one of Turkey’s most important Twentieth Century artists. Mualla moved to Paris in 1939, during this period he was influenced by the Fauvist artists and he created these gouaches of block colours depicting scenes from Parisian society and life, such as the present work. Jean-Louis Forain (1852-1931) - Portrait de femme
Oil on canvas, 36.2 x 28.3cm. Jean-Louis Forain was a French Impressionist known for his paintings and etchings of Parisian nightlife, operas, and cafes. Forain was influenced by his friend and fellow artist Edgar Degas, this is evident in his approach of elements of bright colour on a blurred background, with isolated areas of sharp precision in detail. Joseph Csaky (1888-1971) - La Liseuse, 1938
Bronze, signed and numbered HC1 on the base, stamped with the Blanchet foundry stamp and marked AC (Atelier Csaky), length 90.5cm. The artwork is a posthumous edition from the Blanchet-Landowski Foundry in Paris, after the original work of 1920. Csaky is considered one of the most important sculptors of the 20th Century. Initially studying in Budapest, Csaky moved to Paris in 1908, basing himself in a studio at La Ruche where his neighbours included Alexander Archipenko, Marc Chagall, Henri Laurens, Fernand Léger, and Chaim Soutine. Picasso and Braque at the time had just begun experimenting with Cubism, and Csáky and Archipenko were among the first artists to create Cubist sculptures. Csáky’s present sculpture shows his more figurative style found towards the second half of his artistic career. See Price Estimate...

René Burri was a Swiss photographer and a member of Magnum Photos and photographed major political, historical and cultural events and key figures of the second half of the 20th century. Oil on canvas, signed and dated 58 lower right, 81 x 116cm. (unframed). Pierre de Berroeta was a French painter whos work was featured in an exhibition at the Hanina Fine Arts. Pierre de Berroeta's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging from $310 USD to $5,836 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. Since 2004 the record price for this artist at auction is $5,836 USD for Composition, pièce unique, sold at FauveParis in 2019. See Price Estimate...

Paul Jenkins (1923-2012) - The Leap, 1955
Oil and mixed technique on canvas, signed lower left, signed and dated 55 on the reverse, 53 x 80cm. Jenkins' innovative application of paint and experimental techniques led to a long-held association with many of the great Abstract Expressionists of the 20th Century.
From 1955 onwards Jenkins split his year between New York, Paris and Provence. The present painting shows one of his early abstractions, popular amongst the New York and European market. Instead of using a paint brush, Jenkins favours pouring paint onto the surface of a primed canvas, allowing it to drip, pool and spread in unusual patterns. See Price Estimate...

Antonio Corpora (1909-2004) - Abstract in blue and green, 1948
Gouache on card, signed and dated 48 lower right, 47x32cm. A rare blue and green abstract by Antonio Corpora from 1948 is also included in the auction. Corpora studied under Arman Vergeaud, at the art Academy in Tunisia. Later he travelled to Europe and in 1931 settled in Paris, where he met Sergio Signori and Alberto Giacometti. In 1945, he would make Italy his home, where he collaborated with Guttuso, Fazzini and the other members of the ‘Neo-Cubista’ group. Towards the end of the 1940s, when this piece was created, he began to reject Cubist formulae and adopted a freer formula idiom. See Price Estimate...

Béla Kádár (1877-1956) - Abstract untitled, circa 1940
Gouache on board. Another Eastern European piece within the sale is by the Hungairan artist Béla Kádár who became one of the most famous members of the early twentieth century Hungarian avant-garde movement. He notably employed aesthetics from a range of movements, such as Constructivism, Cubism, and German Expressionism, and focused on traditional Hungarian folklore to inspire his imagery. Ossip Zadkine (1890-1967) - Portrait d’hommes (portrait of men), 1948
Watercolour and gouache on paper, signed and dated 48 lower right, 40 x 31cm. This 1948 work was completed in Paris after Zadkine’s return from American exile during World War II, at around the time Zadkine had received international acclaim. A large-scale retrospective exhibition would take place in Rotterdam in 1949 and following that his presentation of the Grand prix de Sculpture at the 1950 Venice Biennale. From 1946, he was teaching young artists from many countries at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Zadkine frequently mixed in La Ruche and worked alongside the avant-garde artists, Fernand Léger, Joseph Csaky and Alexander Archipenko. See Price Estimate...

Pastel and crayons on paper, titled Paris - Cœur à Cœur, upper right, 21.5 x 13.5cm; along with a text by Jean Cocteau signed and dated 1962. This crayon design is an example of the distinctive style of Jean Cocteau, a major figure of twentieth century culture. This drawing, and the letter that accompanies it, explores Cocteau’s personal memories of Paris and the central role that the city played in the development of his work. It also celebrates Paris as a centre of wider artistic creativity in the mid-twentieth century. As such, this work is of great cultural significance, as an evocation of the city which gave rise to many of the greatest artistic movements of the early twentieth century, by an artist who was intimately involved with them himself. Pastel and pigment on tapa, signed and dated 95/96 lower left, 108 x 302cm. Karel Nel is a respected collector of African, Asian and Oceanic art with a particular interest in currencies. He is considered an expert in southern African art and advises and consults museums in South Africa, New York, London and Paris. Over many years Nel has been interested in the interface between art and science, and his investigations have led to his inclusion in the COSMOS project, as artist- in-residence, involving more than a hundred scientists around the world charged with mapping a two-degree square area of the sky. Bronze, height 38cm. This piece was cast by Fiorini and Carby, London between 1965 and 1966. It is believed this cast is number 2 of an edition of 6, Grosvenor Gallery suggest only 3 casts were sold.
Lots 13 to 15 originate from the estate of Abe Gottlieb (died 1976), whom was President of Liberty Fabrics of New York based at 105 Madison Avenue, New York. He bought 45 recorded works from Eric Estorick from 24th July 1961 to 1st August 1966 including Kirchner, Archipenko, Mane-Katz, Epstein and Michael Ayrton. See Price Estimate...

Bronze, 32.7cm. It is believed this is cast number 2 of an edition of 6 that was produced by Fiorini and Carby, London. The work was cast during the 1960s, executed after the plaster preserved in the Collection of the National Gallery in Prague (inventory no. NG P 5099). Lots 13 to 15 originate from the estate of Abe Gottlieb (died 1976), whom was President of Liberty Fabrics of New York based at 105 Madison Avenue, New York. He bought 45 recorded works from Eric Estorick from 24th July 1961 to 1st August 1966 including Kirchner, Archipenko, Mane-Katz, Epstein and Michael Ayrton. See Price Estimate...
