Karel Appel (1921-2006) - Portrait of Jeanne Heimann
Canvas, signed m.o., 60 x 36 cm. Jeanne Heimann lived in Houthem, Limburg and was portrayed by Karel Appel and Corneille during their trip to Liège in 1946. They probably ended up with the Heimann family via Henk van Gemert, a friend of Karel Appel's who stayed for a long time in the neighbourhood of Houthem and sold a few paintings to the Heimann family (see lots 4602, 4603 and 4605). Stone carved oval shield, the top carved with a raised wedge and a design of eyes, zoomorphic forms, circle motives and an anthropomorphic face. The plane decorated with two larger carved diamond-shaped forms with a star- and diamond shape within, both with indentations on the outer rim.
