When Art meets Covid-19: How Artists are Taking on the Virus | Phase 1

In this article, we have selected some of the most trending Instagram artists who have been inspired by life during COVID 19.

Left: Classical Office, by @allad8; Right: Who cares about toilet paper if you still have Twilight books..., by @allad8

A few years ago Alla Mingalёva saw her colleagues talking on beanbags after a hard working day and thought “They look exactly like characters from my favorite classical paintings”. A week later, she had almost a dozen “classical office” sketches. In her work, @allad8 uses characters from paintings by renowned artists like John William Godward, Alexandre Cabanel, Michelangelo, Johannes Vermeer and Sandro Botticelli.
"My work is open to interpretations and I like that everyone can find their own meanings and themselves in these characters/situations."

Left: Art supplies check, by @travis_chapman_artist; Right: Quarantine. Month 3, by @allad8

Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring is a favorite character for many digital artists. Travis Chapman depicts her as an artist who has stocked with art supplies for the quarantine period while Alla Mingalёva's illustration is of a girl with a hamburger in her hand, AirPods, and some kilos gained.

Left: Quarantine - Day 11, by @hayatininevreni; Right: When only a pillow fits you after curfew :(, by @allad8

Vincent van Gogh masterpieces are one of the most inspiring subjects for today's artists. His artwork, The Bedroom, has been manipulated to represent quarantine days and call people to stay at home. While Van Gogh was in Arles, he made this painting of his bedroom in the Yellow House. He prepared the room himself with simple furniture and with his own work on the wall. The bright colours were meant to express absolute ‘repose’ or ‘sleep’.
The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli is another painting contemporary artists love to edit. Alla Mingalёva depicts Venus with the most popular outfit among fashion influencers during the quarantine - a pillow.

Left: It's enough for everyone!, by @vlad_sorescu; Right: Less prayin', more washin', by @vlad_sorescu

In The Adoration of the Shepherds by Matthias Stomer, all the figures turn their eyes to the Child, who has been replaced with toilet paper by the artist Vlad Sorescu showing in a funny way how precious it was perceived during the early days of the pandemic. The artist also puts a bar of soap in the hands of the Virgin Mary by Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato and titles it Less prayin', more washin'.

Left: David in New York, by @allad8; Right: I'm NOT PaaaAaniikinGGG!!!!!, by @allad8

Famous sculptures like David by Michelangelo and on The Statue of Liberty by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi have also been used by contemporary artists to depict the current situation in a funny yet very accurate way. The Statue of Liberty is a figure of Libertas, a robed Roman liberty goddess who holds a torch above her head with her right hand, and in her left hand carries a tabula ansata inscribed JULY IV MDCCLXXVI, the date of the ratification of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. The torch and the tabula ansata have been replaced by hand sanitizer and toilet paper by the artist Alla Mingalёva.

Left: We are on duty! What we want from you. STAY HOME and wash your hands, by @gabriel.vasquez.art; Right: Find the beautiful things during stressful times, by @gabriel.vasquez.art

Crystal artists, who are becoming more and more popular on Instagram, also have been influenced by the current situation and have created digital artworks with strong messages. Gabriel Vasquez puts glitter on essential protective tools like masks, hats, and gloves with the titles: "We are on duty! What we want from you. STAY HOME and wash your hands" and "Find the beautiful things during stressful times".

Left: Alice in Coronaland, by @donna_adi; Right: A WHOLE NEW WORLD!! 2020 is seriously a new world for us! I'm practicing my social distancing, but does it still count if it's Aladdin!?, by @donna_adi

Donna Adi is an artist and creative director from Los Angeles whose illustrative twists have taken Instagram by storm. She combines vibrant illustrations with lifestyle and fashion photographs. Her artworks also include illustrating Disney characters like "Alice in Wonderland" who is now Alice in Coronaland and Aladdin and Princess Jasmine who are wearing masks and keeping social distant.
