Impressive view of Venice in filigree coloring, with a bird's eye view onto the harbor as well as the entire city. With rich marine staffage, with filigree figure illustrations of doges in lower center, as well as with a comprehensive legend. Everything executed in superb coloring. Latin text on rear.
Almost 100 years after the first city views were made, both geographic knowledge of regions and cities, as well as printing techniques had advanced so much that new standards were set. While Sebastian Münster still used woodcuts in his continuously published 'Cosmographie', which showed a coarse image and was only released in low print-run, Georg Braun used the copper engraving technique for his illustrations. He had been inspired by the first atlases from Abraham Ortelius, and released his acclaimed atlas 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum' in 1572. For a long time this groundbreaking work was the standard in city view engraving.
