Chinese Jade Temple Lion with Urn, Inlaid Silver Stand

Carved Qing Dynasty jade figural guardian temple lion or foo dog, depicted crouching with an open mouth supporting a covered urn atop its back. Lion with low relief carved floral decoration to body, and the urn with carved foliate handles and rings to 3 handles. Fitted with a carved and silver inlaid hardwood stand. Lion and urn (without stand): 7" H x 6 1/2" W x 2 1/4" D. With stand: 8 5/8" H x 6 5/8" W x 3 1/4" D. Late 19th/Early 20th century. Provenance: The collection of Gary Glesser of Loudon, Tennessee, by descent from his grandparents, Captain Hoyt and Rachel Holton of Toledo, Ohio. Hoyt Holton became, at age 17, the youngest captain of a Great Lakes Freighter. In the 1960s, Captain Holton participated in a 26-day Admiral Byrd Society trip replicating the explorer's famous transpolar expedition, during which he met the Pope and Soviet Premier Nikita Kruschev. Many items in the collection were brought back as souvenirs from that journey and other frequent voyages.

Condition Report: Carved animal in overall very good condition with the lid on the urn having one missing ring. Stand with minor damage to inlay near one center foot.
