In very good, clean, bright condition with very little sign of use during there circa 180 years life. Includes 171 hand coloured plates in these four volumes as called for including 23 folding and one of garden design showing layout of flower beds. (There are 717 plates in the entire set.) For those of you unfamiliar with the Paxton's, unlike the Curtis Botanical magazine, this famous and beautifully illustrated periodical contains more than just descriptions of the plants and include a number of line illustrations of plants, buildings, features etc. Beautiful contemporary green half calf binding with gilt stamped decoration and gilt lining and lettering. All page edges marbled. Pages in good crisp condition with no apparent creasing to corners and generally no tears and splits. The edge definition of the plants illustrated are generally clean, clear and precise. Foxing to plates varies from none through light to a few with heavier foxing. The heaviest are the garden design plates. There is some offsetting but mainly from plates to tissue guards. No sign of any offsetting from text to plates. The majority of the line drawings are clean and bright. . It is essential that potential purchasers look at the numerous extra pictures that are available form us on request. Please bear in mind that these have been compressed for ease of web viewing and are only meant to give a general impression of the excellent condition of this run. The plates are in reality cleaner than appears in the photos as the white balance error of the camera shows some pink tinges which are not present. However you can gauge clearly the extent of foxing. Many plates are clean and we have concentrated on showing a cross section rather than the best so you can gauge a fair representation. For those collectors fortunate enough to have the later volumes (5 - 16) the plates in the first four volumes, whilst being to the same very high standard are slightly less bright and vibrant because the later volumes had more finishing. The quality control on the hand colouring of Paxton Botanical was very high resulting in an excellent degree of consistency which is extremely difficult to achieve. These books were originally retained in a major private collection and have only become available through the collector acquiring a full 16 volume set in matching bindings. The replacement set, reckoned to be one of the best to be offered to the market in recent years are generally in similar condition to the volumes available here. Size: 6.5" - 9.25" Tall.
