First Edition of this sequel to Burton s The Gold Mines Of Midian (1878), describing Burton s second expedition through Midian in northwest Arabia. Midian became known as a highly rich source for gold, especially in the areas where ancient artifacts were located. Although Burton failed to find the vast amounts of gold he believed were in the region, he and his team succeeded in exploring and mapping a 600-mile territory and detailing eighteen ruined cities in the North and thirteen in the South. The expedition was sponsored by the Egyptian Khedive Isma il I, for whom Burton brought back twenty-five tons of minerals to be assayed. Only 1000 copies of the book were printed. Penzer pp. 96-7.
