Complete: Volumes 1 ¿ 39, Volumes 1-5 of plates, Atlas Volume.Abraham Rees¿s Cyclopaedia (Publ. 1819-1820) is bound in full contemporary calf with gilt triple-ruled panels front and rear and gilt-tooled panelled spines. Each volume has a bookplate indicating ownership by the Earls of Findlater and Seafield. Volumes 2 and 7 have partly detached spines and the spine of Volume 32 is detached. The front board of the Atlas volume is detached but the contents (61 plates) are complete. Volume 1 lacks frontispiece of Abraham Rees called for in list of plates at end of Volume 39. Volume 37 and Plates Volume 1 have been professionally rebacked with the original spines laid on. Endpapers, title pages and some plates lightly spotted throughout. Otherwise this is a splendid and attractive copy of an important encyclopaedia from the early 19C. Renowned for its articles on music by Charles Burney (illustrated with many plates and music examples in the text), chemistry by Humphrey Davy and John Dalton, canals by John Farey Sr. and schools of European engraving by John Landseer. The volumes of plates include, among many subjects, naval architecture, technological and scientific topics and sculpture ¿ engravings by Wilson Lowry, John Farey, father and son, and some by William Blake, Extremely heavy set that will attract extra shipping charges especially for international customers.
