In contemporary paneled calf, heavily marked, modern antique style re-back with gilt tooling and titles in gilt to maroon calf labels, and repairs to outer corners. Internally, thick blue marbled endpapers, hinges strengthened, [16], (vii), [1], [1], 2-250, 251-254, 251-314 pp, [20], notes index and addenda, 1 map, 30 engraved copper plates, 5 illustrations within text, many engraved initials, head and tail pieces, some light browning throughout, and occasional minor stains, occasional heavy offsetting, a few pinhead wormholes to lower inner margins, aeg, ink dedication to ffep, the double paged map is by Thomas Jefferys 43*36cm), includes the interesting 10 page list of subscribers showing some from Virginia. (Folio 41*26 cm) (ESTC T147028. Nissen 950. Sabin 33582. Hunt 536) Hughes, (bap. 1707, d. 1758?), Church of England clergyman and naturalist, published 4 Welsh books in America. Whilst in Barbados, Hughes developed the idea of publishing a book on the island's natural history. In 1743 he visited London with the intention of promoting this work and ingratiated himself with the leading scientists of the day, men such as Sir Hans Sloane and Martin Folkes. Before returning home, he had arranged for the leading artist George Dionysius Ehret to prepare plates for his book. See ODNB. Seller Inventory # 005156
