About this Item
RARE VOLUME. Spine gilt-lettered with "Sainte-Beuve - Morceaux Choisis". Selected pieces. Edition originale. First edition. Text in French. Published without the author's name on title page ("Sainte-Beuve" in gilt to spine), & apparently this very scarce work by the famed literary critic was initially reserved for the author's friends, not for the public. Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve (1804-1869), literary critic and one of the major figures of French literary history. Contemporary ink notation to first blank ("a mon ami" & then signed by?). With comprehensive footnotes. Imprimerie de H. Fournier et Cie, Rue Saint-Benoit, 7, Paris. Fine binding. Bound in full leather, gilt-lettered red leather label to spine, elaborate floral gilt decoration in compartments to spine, raised bands, covers gilt-ruled, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, marbled page edges, red ribbon page marker. Small leather piece from one raised band lacking to spine, small chip to base of spine (obscuring part of binder's details), hinges very slightly loose (but holding), light foxing throughout, pencil notation in French to ffep (regarding the rarity), otherwise overall an exceptional nice clean tight solid leatherbound copy. A fine binding. 284pp. EXTREMELY RARE. Seller Inventory # 001424
