We offer a signed gelatin silver photographic print by Louis Stettner. The image measures 17 ¾ x 11 7/8 on 19 7/8 x 14 ¾ paper. Signed and inscribed at the bottom margin on verso Twin Towers 1979, Louis Stettner with his blindstamp signature visible on recto. Printed by Stettner at a later date. It is perhaps one of the most iconic images of the World Trade Center s twin towers, and certainly one of Stettner's most famous images. The skyline appears in a ghostly mist of tonal grays, with a seagull hovering over the water in full focus. Separate, but included with this photo, is an image of Stettner signing on the verso of the photograph. Louis Stettner was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1922. His output was significant and his career lengthy. He began taking pictures with a box camera his father gave him as a young boy and at age 18 became a combat photographer for the Signal Corps in Europe, the South Pacific and Japan. He spent time in Paris in the 50 s and 60 s, returning to New York City to teach in the 70 s. He died at his home in Saint-Ouen, France in 2016. His most well-known images include: Aubervilliers, Brooklyn Promenade, Twin Towers with Sea Gull, Penn Station, and the Statue of Liberty, Battery Park. His work is in many permanent collections including: the Art Institute of Chicago, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the International Center of Photography, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Whitney Museum of Art.
