Venetian Cretan school The term Cretan school indicates an important pictorial school, also known as the Post-Byzantine school, a movement that flourished on the island of Crete under the control of the Serenissima between 1204 and 1669. Thanks to this political situation, in particularly after the fall of Constantinople, it was the main Christian artistic center of Greek origin from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century. In this environment a particular pictorial style developed which was marked both by the tradition and by the Byzantine and Latin matrix movements. The greatest artist of this school was El Greco, an artist who, after taking his first steps in this environment, soon left the island for Venice, gradually abandoning his initial imprint. Beautiful Cretan Venetian panel from the first half of the 17th century, as seen from the support and from the cracking of the color in the photo. large format compared to the average 46x38 cm. excellent condition, almost all the glazes of the color are well preserved, small lack at the bottom right of the panel as seen in the photo, the wooden support is also in excellent condition. accurate packaging and shipping is guaranteed.
