A William III Silver Punch-Bowl

tapering cylindrical and on spreading spiral-fluted foot, the body overall fluted and chased with foliage at the border, with reeded rim, later engraved inside with a coat-of-arms below a baron's coronet and outside with a crest

The engraved crest is that of Dundas and the engraved coat-of-arms are those of Dundas impaling FitzWilliam below a baron’s coronet, for Sir Thomas Dundas, 2nd Baronet and later 1st Baron Dundas (1741-1820) and his wife Lady Charlotte FitzWilliam, (d.1833), daughter of William FitzWilliam, 3rd Earl FitzWilliam (d.1756).
Sir Thomas was the son of Sir Lawrence Dundas, 1st Baronet and his wife Margaret Bruce. He was a man of great means as well as a politician and, from 1794 when he was created Baron Dundas, a peer of the realm. His father had been a great collector of art and his son was to follow in his footsteps, for example commissioning Pompeo Batoni to paint his full-length portrait while on a grand tour. The portrait remains at Aske Hall, near Richmond, which he inherited from his father and which remains in the family of his descendants to this day. His son Lawrence was created 1st Earl of Zetland in 1838, at the time of the coronation of Queen Victorian in honour of the financial assistance he has given to the Duke and Duchess of Kent, Victoria's parents. The first earl's grandson, also Lawrence, was to be created 1st Marquess of Zetland in 1892.

Fully marked near rim. There is some wear to the marks but each is still legible. Further engraved underneath with a scratch weight '41 15'. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a softening to the high points. There is some minor bruising and the foot is very slightly pushed up into the body., The engraving is later though there is no sign of an earlier erasure. The rim is approximately half a centimeter and the scratch weight is consistent with the actual weight of the bowl which suggests the bowl never had a monteith rim.

Auction: Jewellery, Watches & Silver, 18th May, 2024
The May Jewellery, Watches and Silver Sale will include an interesting group of late 17th and 18th century silver, lead by a circa 1650 Memento Mori Watch-Case in the form of a Skull, and a William III Silver Punch Bowl made in London in 1697 by Benjamin Pyne. Also of interest is a group of three lots of silver by early 20th century master silversmith H.G. Murphy, and a silver sculptural trophy of Shakespeare, given in memory of an actor killed in WWII, is to be sold by the Hull Music Festival to raise funds to support the education and development of young performers in the area.
The Jewellery section will be opened by a selection of silver jewellery by Georg Jensen, which will include a stylish matching set of ‘Forget-Me-Knot’ Earrings and Brooch designed by Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe for Georg Jensen. Colourful jewels are also amongst the highlights, with pieces by Catherine Best and H. Stearn, and a Citrine and Diamond Brooch. There are also several sets of Gentleman's Cufflinks.
A good offering of World War II Military Watches, from a Private Collection, lead a wide variety of vintage collectable and luxury watches, alongside a selection of pocket watches. Highlights include a rare circa 1944 IWC Mark X Military Issue Wristwatch – one of the so called “Dirty Dozen”, a 2006 18 carat gold Hermès Lady’s Cape Cod Wristwatch, and a rare 1809 Silver Eight Day Duration Verge Pocket Watch with Calendar Display by Jno Hill of London.
