James, John Thomas; "Journal of a Tour in Germany, Sweden, Russia, Poland, During the Years 1813 and 1814", London: John Murray, 1816. Quarto, later full polished calf, gilt spine and central medallion on front cover, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, uncut, in a custom felt-lined leather edged slipcase. First edition, one of only 12 copies issued with 18 fine engraved India proof plates of scenic views of Germany, Sweden, Russia and Poland, as well as a vignette title page and tailpiece plan of Moscow. 11 1/2" x 9", 594 pages.
James visited the courts of Berlin, Stockholm and St. Petersburg; he traveled to Moscow, just after it had burned and then on through Poland to Vienna. "An entertaining work, containing much useful and important matter, particularly relative to Russia." On leaf with closed tear. Text and mounted India proof plates clean and fine with only slight offsetting from the plates. A beautiful copy, splendidly bound and illustrated. Provenance: Purchased from and described by Bauman Rare Books of Philadelphia and New York.
