Complete Latin Bible with the commentaries of Nicholas of Lyra:
Three volumes of the Koberger edition printed in 1485
and
one volume of the edition printed 1482/83 in Venice by Franz Renner.
This Koberger edition is the first illustrated Latin bible,
volume 1 with 28 woodcuts come from the Koberger print of Postilla Nicolaus' de Lyra from Jan. 22, 1481, making them the oldest illustrations in the print shop.
They depict the ark of the covenant, the large candlestick, tablets of the law, high priests, the temple, floor plans, etc. in schematic form.
Gothic type, 2 columns, text surrounded by comments in smaller type
With initials in gold and colors, numerous initials painted in red and blue
Mostly marginal dampstaining in places, mostly marginal worming to the Renner volume, some worm holes to the other volumes here and there, few margin corners torn off.
Pages are mostly crisp and clear, in very good condition.
Folio, size 9 by 13"
Blindtooled calf bindings over wooden boards, partly slightly different, with 15 (of 32) corner fittings and 6 (of 8) center pieces made of brass, remains of clasps, scraped and partly wormed, spine overpainted with paint and damaged.
All volumes with 17th century ownership inscriptions of the Jesuit College in Burghausen (Upper Bavaria), dated 1646, 1634, 1653 and 1646
The New Testament with some marginalia from the old hand that refer to Luther, corresponding to the endpaper with the old entry:
"Si Lira non lirasset Lutherus non dictasset".
