14th C. Charrua Indians Stone Weapon / Mace Head

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, Uruguay, east of modern Montevideo, Charrua Indians, ca. 14th to 15th century CE. An intriguing throwing weapon or perhaps a mace head carved by hand from porous grey stone with several conical projections extending from all surfaces. Stone weapons like this example were thrown at high speeds to ensure that maximum blunt-force damage was inflicted regardless of which projection(s) hit the target. Its multi-lobed design also enabled it to be secured to a length pole and used as a sturdy mace. Size: 4.5" W x 3.25" H (11.4 cm x 8.3 cm); 3.7" H (9.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
