15th C. Argentinian Mapuche Stone Pipes

Pre-Columbian, northern Chile, Mapuche people, ca. 1500 CE. A handsome pair of hand-carved stone pipes, both boasting smooth surfaces and mottled hues of taupe and ash gray. The larger pipe displays a cylindrical bowl with a flared rim and a lengthy, narrow stem. Alternatively, the smaller pipe presents a square bowl with a triangular stem that tapers to a narrow lip and a raised, tab-shaped handle at the back. Size of largest: 2.8" L x 1.2" W x 1.9" H (7.1 cm x 3 cm x 4.8 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Bettina Schwimmer collection, Chicago, Illinois, USA, collected from 1955 to 2006
