[ translate ]

Title: 1633 Hondius Map od Bermuda -- Mappa Aestivarum Insularum, alias Barmudas dictarum…
Cartographer: H Hondius
Year/Place: 1633, Amsterdam
Map Dimensions (in.): 15.5 X 20.5 in.
Description: This is a rather striking map of Bermuda. The map shows the division into the original Tribes throughout Bermuda, a short-lived name for what became administrative parishes, who were the major shareholders in the company. Also shown are the various landowners, with their names in a table below the map. There are many tiny houses shown on the map, showing the settlements, castles, as well as minute cannons marking the defensible points. The map is superimposed over a chart of the Atlantic with the coastlines of Britain, North America and Hispaniola showing the location of Bermuda in correct relative size. There is an exquisite strapwork cartouche, a coat of arms, a medallion and a compass rose. The map is based on the landmark survey by Richard Norwood of the Bermuda Company, also known as the Somers Isles Company, in 1618. Dutch text on verso.
