1660 Jansson Map of the Arabian Peninsula and Red Sea

[ translate ]

Title/Content of Map: 1660 Jansson Map of the Arabian Peninsula and Red Sea -- Arabiae Felicis, Petrae ae et Desertae Nova et Accurata Delineatio
Cartographer: J Jansson
Year/Place: 1660 c., Amsterdam
Size: 17.3 X 20.2 in.

This is a very nice, somewhat uncommon map of the Arabian Peninsula, called Arabia Felix here, and Red Sea. The coastlines are fairly well represented and the interior details are still a bit scetchy. Much detail is shown as to topography, rivers and lakes, many of which are non-existent, and settlement, Mecca, and Medina included, but many with speculative locations presumably from merchants and explorers. The interior is filled with images of lions, camels and elephants and a sea monster guarding the entrance to the Red Sea. The map is decorated with two cartouches featuring putti and depictions of the inhabitants of the region.
