16th C. Thai Anamese Glazed Pottery Lime Pot, ex-Museum

[ translate ]

Southeast Asia, Vietnam, Anamese (sometimes Annamese), ca. 16th century CE. A hand-built earthenware lime-pot known as a binh voi, featuring a fluted strap handle, a ring foot, appliqued design elements, and a green glaze surface. The handle is beautifully ridged and exudes a sinuous vegetal vine and serpentine presence. Appliqued design elements are emphasized where the handle joins the vessel's spherical rotund body. Lime-pots were used to keep powdered lime, which was combined with areca nut and betel leaf for chewing. A circular hole on the side of this vessel would allow one to access the powder with the help of a petite spoon or ladle. Size: 6" Diameter x 8" H (15.2 cm x 20.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
