Engraved portrait after Vertue.
Bound in original gilt-tooled and decoratively blind-stamped calf.
Marbled endpapers. Gilt edges.
xii, 360 pp.
Binding worn, with minor damages . Front cover is detached.
Clean interior, some toning.
Couple of engravings with archival tape restored tears, one with restored margin (visible on the photo).
One part of the fold-out engraving is detached
One leaf - blank ? (between text and plates section) is missing , also missing the last leaf and final blank

Joseph Spence (1699-1768), a friend of Alexander Pope and member of his literary circle, was both "amiable and high-principled."
The qualities made him much in demand as an escort for the sons of English gentlemen and nobility on the Grand Tour of Europe.
