1779 Sterling Silver Tastevin with Louis XVI Medal: Taste Vin (aka: Taste vin, Tastevinage) mounted with commemorative silver medal of Louis XVI (1754 - 1793) and Marie-Antoinette (1755-1793), The Birth of the Dauphin, Silver Medal, 1781, by B du Vivier, for the six Guilds of Merchants in Paris, busts vis-Ã -vis, he with Order on sash, she with dress and hair combed high, LUD XVI FR ET NAV REX * MAR ANT AUSTR REG, rev dolphin entwined around the rudder of the ship, the fleet sails beyond, ASSERENDI NOVA SPES COMMERCII, REGI DE ORTU SS DELPHINI SEX MERCATOR . PARIS . ORDINES GRATULANTUR AUSP. DUCIS DE COSSE MDCCLXXXI. The medal surrounded by fleur de lys, the exterior with wine casks and grapevines, the edge of the cup engraved, "F.D Montlosier 1782" and the handle in the form of double dragons holding a pearl. The side impressed with duty marks, date marks (crowned Q with the heart of a lily ) and maker's marks PB under a crown.

Dimensions are: 1 5/8" high X 4 1/2" diameter X 5 3/4" diameter. Total weight: 325 g, 10.44 troy oz. All measurements are approximate.

Condition: Free of chips, cracks, and repairs.

Provenance: This item is part of the Slade family holdings of paintings, sterling silver and Chinese porcelain (see Oakridge Auction Gallery's March 14th auction, lots. 149 to lot. 155, which was a Chinese blanc de chine Dehua figurine of a robed Bodhidharma or Damo which sold for $416,000USD). The collection was assembled by several members of the family and then by descent to the present owner. The collection was begun by Henry Adolphus Warre Slade (1869 - 1936). He was a British businessman, member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong (1908/09) and the Director of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation between 1900 and 1902. The collection was added to by his sons, Royal Navy Commander Gerald Gordon Slade, who fought in both World Wars, and his brother Maurice Gordon Slade, pictured with his mother Beatrice Slade (photo not included). The Slade family hold peerage and are noted in Charles Mosley’s. “Burke's Peerage”.
