(CHARACTERISTICKS, LETTERS AND OTHER WORKS OF MILORD COUNT OF SHAFTSBURY.
LATEST EDITION TRANSLATED FROM ENGLISH BY MR. PASCAL, AND REVISED ON THE ORIGINAL BY M.J.B. ROBINET.)
3 volumes
Amsterdam & Leipzig, 1780
Size : 5 1/4 by 8"
[40]-353, [12]-332, [12]-422 pp.
Toning, foxing.
Very good condition of the binding (period vellum)
Unusual, of this translation of the works of the Earl of Shaftesbury,
Anthony Ashley Cooper (1671-1713), Neoplatonic philosopher and English politician.
The translation is mainly due to Jean-Baptiste Robinet (1735-1820), who notably took over that by Diderot of the "Inquiry Concerning Virtue" ("Principles of moral philosophy or Essay of M. S *** on the merit of virtue ", Amst., 1745).
Also presumed author of the preface, Robinet did not simply "revise" the translation, but he oriented it in the direction of a modern and continental materialism (see the analysis given by Laurent Jaffroy, "Diderot, worm work on inner jaws and guards).
Ref. Conlon 61: 1049. - BnF. - Not in ESTC. Prov. Leporini (mention ms.)
