17th C. Chinese Qing Dynasty Glazed Pottery Urn

East Asia, China, early Qing Dynasty, ca. late 17th to first half of 18th century CE. A sizable, wheel-thrown pottery urn with a flared foot, a broad body with a deep basin, tall walls surmounted by a tall rim that leans gently inwards, and a pair of applied handles. The upper shoulder is decorated with a diagonally striated carination, and layers of lustrous glaze envelop the vessel in mottled hues of green and brown. Urns like this were perhaps used as temple vessels or decorative storage containers. Size: 13.75" W x 9.625" H (34.9 cm x 24.4 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, acquired between the 1980s and 2000s

Condition Report: Chip to bottom of foot, with nicks and abrasions to rim, handles, body, and foot, fading and chipping to glaze pigment, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits and remains of original glaze pigment throughout.
