17th c. Blue & White "Deshima Island" Pattern Pottery

[ translate ]

17th century blue and white van Frytom Delft style pottery plate in the "Deshima Island" pattern, depicting three Western figures with a bull outside of a village in the background. The villagers are in a coastal landscape with sails of ships seen in the distance. The rim is crimped and decorated with a wave border. The reverse is decorated with floral sprays.

This pattern was originally thought to be of Deshima Island, the V.O.C. Dutch East India Company headquarters in Japan from 1641 to 1862. However, this scene more likely depicts the Dutch coastal town of Scheveningen. The design is thought to be inspired by Frederic van Frytom (1632-1702), one of the most significant 17th century Dutch Delft painters.
