1850 Japanese Fashion Kimono Pattern Book Japan
1850 Japanese Fashion Kimono Pattern Book Japan Illustrated Woodblock Print
An interesting Meiji era handwritten woodblock-print of a Kimono Pattern Book or Catalogue. Kimono pattern catalogues were popular in the Meiji era functioning as fashion magazines, where fabric sellers paid publishers to print pattern books for potential clients from the warrior and merchant classes, while artists and designers launched their own clothing brands. Clothing designers could concoct ideas for new patterns, while prospective customers could imagine what sort of kimono they wanted as they browsed a ‘pattern book’. Almost all kimonos share the same shape, so Kimonos express personality through their selection of colors, symbols, and pattern placement.
This rare undated two-volume edition includes a handwritten note asking it to be returned to the merchant Minoichi in Gokan village after reading it. This edition contains excellent illustrations throughout!
