Charles Nordhoff was a 19th-century American writer. Born in Prussia, Nordhoff emigrated to America and served in the United States Navy in his early teen years. He was part of a world-tour on the USS Columbus which inspired his book “Man-of-War Life” which, as the title suggests, was an account of his experiences on a ship in the US Navy.

This book offers descriptions of life on an American naval ship, ports in Brazil, Japan, and China, exploring the coasts of California, and living in a Harbor.
