1889 1ed Master of Ballantrae Robert Louis Stevenson
1889 1ed Master of Ballantrae Robert Louis Stevenson Winter’s Tale Scotland
Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson was a Scottish essayist, poet, and author of fiction and travel books, best known for his novels ‘Treasure Island,’ ‘Kidnapped,’ ‘Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,’ and ‘The Master of Ballantrae’ published in 1889.
Originally published serially in Scribner's Magazine 1888-1889, ‘The Master of Ballantrae’ is a novel in which Stevenson revisits the theme of moral ambiguity that he explored in his 1886 novel ‘Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’. Specifically, it tells the story of James Durie and his younger brother Henry, who took opposing sides in the second Jacobite Rebellion of 1745 and divided their family as a result. After the Master, his father's favorite son, is presumed a casualty of combat, Henry must assume his older brother's position in the family and marry his wife, causing the Master to feel cheated and vengeful when he returns to find his younger brother in his place.
