18c Japanese sword tsuba Bushishi & Roko SENNINS
18th century or earlier Japanese sword iron tsuba with raised and inlaid decoration of 2 sennin (Chinese sages), one sitting on a turtle swimming in the waves under a pine tree, the other flying on an open scroll among clouds, design continuing on the back. Those figures are Sennin Roko (some identify him with Sennin Koan) who lived for 3 thousand years on the back of a turtle with a dragon head, and Sennin Bushishi who was able to ride on a magic scroll and ascend to heaven if he wished. Excellent sharp work with gold, silver and copper inlays, superb detailing - see the scroll cords, pine needle clusters and water drops in the waves. In excellent condition, no losses or repairs. Height 3 1/4 inches.
