18th C. English Silver & Agate Forks & Knives (8)

Northwestern Europe, England, ca. late 18th to 19th century CE. A beautiful collection of 6 sterling silver forks and 2 silver plated knives with agate handles. Each piece is stamped with proofs, purity, and maker marks. The 93.5% silver dessert and 93.3% to 94% silver table forks have personalized initials in script on the front and underside the of the finial. The makers for the forks include Peter, Ann & William Bateman, Randall Chatterton, Henry Holland, and William Easton. The two table knives are 93.7% silver and feature a curved blade with assay marks and engraved with two creatures, a lion and a horse above a crown. Below are 5 separate assay stamps. The faceted handles are made from polished agate with gorgeous umber brown and glassy gray inclusions. Size of knife: 10.25" L x 0.75" W (26 cm x 1.9 cm); dessert fork: 6.75" L x 1" W (17.1 cm x 2.5 cm); silver quality: 93.3% to 94%; total weight: 570 grams

Condition Report: Forks are in excellent condition. Surface wear, scratches, and minor nicks commensurate with age and use. Areas of cleanable toning and patina. Marks are mostly legible, a few are softer and indiscernible. Knives have tearing, buckling, and chips to the silver plating on the blade. Abrasion and nicks to agate handles. Toning and patina to the silver areas.
