18th C. French Dragoon Wood & Brass Flintlock Pistol

Western Europe, France, ca. 1733 to 1760 CE. A model D flintlock pistol meant as a standard-issue pistols to non-officer soldiers in French Dragoon forces. The lengthy wooden stock has a curved handle fitted with a brass butt cap, a single astragal along the midsection, and a narrow cavity underneath the forestock that holds a brass-capped ram rod. The cylindrical steel barrel sits in front of a flintlock firing mechanism and lock plate with an adjustable spark plate, and the trigger is housed within a brass guard. Model C Dragoon pistols bore intricately engraved details along the steel lock plates, bodies, and handles, and model D examples like this one did not have such finery and were meant for lower-ranking soldiers. Condition Report: Stock repaired from multiple pieces, with small areas of restoration along some cracks, and resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions to barrel, stock, handle, and lock plate, with light encrustations. Nice patina throughout. Trigger and hammer still articulate, but pistol has not been tested for firing functionality.
