18th C. Hawaiian Islands Wood Tobacco Pipe

[ translate ]

South Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. late 18th to 19th century CE. A rare and finely-preserved Hawaiian pipe carved from well-grained hardwood. The smoking accessory has a slender stem with a narrow mouthpiece, a curved lower body of a bulbous form, and a circular receptacle cavity lined with an iron tube. A small carburetor directly beneath the receptacle opening on the body enables the user to mitigate or enable the flow of air when lighting and smoking the tobacco contained within. After the beginning of the 18th century CE, Hawaiian natives began trading with foreign ships for additional tobacco and pipes, and began growing their own tobacco crops soon thereafter. Covered in smooth patina, this is a wonderful example of early Hawaiian artistry! Size: 6.375" L x 3.25" H (16.2 cm x 8.3 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hurst collection, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
