18th C. Indian Brass Signal Cannon Stylized Felines

Central Asia, India, ca. late 18th to first half of 19th century CE. A cast-brass signal cannon of a petite size with the large face of a stylized feline incised around each barrel end. The narrow muzzle is surrounded by three astragals with incised segmentation, and a pair of swivel poles protrudes laterally from the midsection. The feline faces are composed of almond-shaped eyes beneath bushy brows, perky ears, and tapered noses. Signal cannons like this example were used on smaller water vessels to alert passing friendly vessels of fire upon invading forces. Great patina envelops the entire cannon. Size: 5.5" L x 2.25" W (14 cm x 5.7 cm)
