18th C. Italian Brass Prickets / Altar Sticks (pr)

Europe, probably Italy, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. A pair of Baroque style tall altar candlesticks, also known as prickets, with repousse plated brass over sculpted wood. Repousse is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is ornamented or shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief. These examples feature central shafts made of a combination of scrolls and volutes, raised on richly adorned tripod bases with foliage and cherub motifs. Each has a tall spike for attaching a candle. Size: 8.5" W x 35.5" H (21.6 cm x 90.2 cm)
Provenance: private Los Angeles County, California, USA collection, acquired by descent from the owner's father, collection amassed between 1950-1990

Condition Report: Dark patina on surface. Some small fissures in the brass, especially around the base, revealing exposed wood. Upper portions have slight bending to form. Nice preservation of motifs.
