18th C. Western European Iron Signal Cannon

Western Europe, probably England or France, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. A forged-iron signal cannon of a hefty form with an octagonal body, a broad cylindrical barrel, a petite flash pan which doubles as a wick spout, and a broad base. Signal cannons like this were used by various nations for naval signaling and for warfare purposes, but they were also utilized as gunpowder testers and festive armaments for celebrations or holidays. Size: 4.8" L x 2.875" W (12.2 cm x 7.3 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in October 2007; ex-Tom Cederlind collection, Portland, Oregon, USA
