18th Century English School. Portrait of Philip Nye (Theologian, c.1595-1672), Oil on Canvas, in a Fine English Carved Giltwood Frame, 30" x 25" (76.2 x 63.5cm). Notes: Following studies at Oxford Nye became a London Curate. He was later employed by Parliament to help imprison Charles I. When the monarchy was restored, Nye was initially excluded from the general pardon resulting in the death penalty. However he was included afterwards in the Bill of Indemnity on the condition that he did not accept any ecclesiastical, civil, military or public office. Instead he worked for an independent church as a Doctor of theology until his death in 1672
