1910s Japanese keyaki wood box 3 WISE MONKEYS

Late Meiji - early Taisho (1910s) very unusual small keyaki (Japanese elm) wood box, its top inlaid with a metal fitting depicting 3 wise monkeys in their habitual "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” attitudes: Mizaru covering his eyes, Kikazaru covering his ears, and Iwazaru covering his mouth. Excellent metalwork with various patinas, superb detailing - see their faces and finely worked fur. Beautiful wood texture, bottom and top fit neatly, in excellent condition. Box length 3 1/16 inches, height 1 inch.
