LOT 33P

1939 MG WA Drophead Coupé, Registration no. 680 UYG Chassis no. WA 0417

Mileage: TBA
MoT: Exempt

*Restored between 2008 and 2014
*Coachwork in the style of Basle's Reinbolt & Christe
*Originally exported to Africa

Built in early 1939 and shipped to Nyasaland (today, Malawi) by 2000 it was in South Africa in rolling chassis form with front bulkhead, bonnet front wings and radiator shell, but minus bodywork. It returned to the UK in that form in 2001, its buyer planning a restoration, but in 2007 it was sold to the vendor and handed over to SVW Services who, with the remit of constructing a body like those of Reinbolt and Christe, constructed the ash frame before it being paneled by Geoff Henderson. The vendor overhauled the engine (believed to have covered around 40,000 miles) and re-built the gearbox, fitting new synchromesh on second, third and top gears, while inside the dashboard was French polished to match the rest of the internal wood. Presented in very dark blue with a grey interior, it cuts an impressive air and it is said total restoration costs came to £75,000.

A highly elegant one-off mimicking the designs of Reinbolt and Christe, this WA has seen trips to Scotland and further afield to France and Switzerland. Closer inspection is recommended.
