This 1958 "Black Beauty" Custom is typical of the model with a solid mahogany body in ebony finish, gold-plated hardware, an ebony fingerboard, and the split-diamond mother of pearl headstock inlay. Deemed the "Fretless Wonder" in the 1958 catalog description, this model boasts three humbucking, adjustable pickups, with increased power and a greater tone. The Les Paul Custom is known for its distinctive, attractive tone derived from the all-mahogany body, as compared to the maple top in the Standard model. This model has been favored by many notable artists including Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, and Eric Clapton, who owned an identical 1958 Les Paul Custom which he used to record "Sunshine of Your Love."SERIAL # 84808 This guitar has an old, professional refinish on both the body and neck, but luckily the original serial number is intact. All cavity and route marks are as they should be for this year and model. The pickups appear to be original or, at minimum, period correct however at least 3 of the potentiometers and one of the capacitors have been replaced. The nut has been replaced. The three pickup rings and bridge have also been replaced with later era Gibson replacement parts. Player-grade Vintage condition. Including original tuners and spare Gibson hard case. This guitar likely had a headstock repair before the refinish.
