Avec le type 220 de 1951, Mercedes-Benz amorçait la modernisation de ses grands modèles en proposant un beau moteur six cylindres à arbre à cames en tête. La 220 S de 1956 parachevait cette évolution en introduisant une caisse monocoque et une moderne carrosserie ponton. La 220 SE de 1958 reçut ensuite un système d'injection Bosch qui lui procura un appréciable gain de couple à un régime inférieur, au bénéfice de l'agrément de conduite. Elle fut déclinée en berline, coupé et cabriolet, ce dernier style étant le plus recherché.
L'exemplaire présenté a été vendu neuf en Californie. Sa daten karte qui la date du 5/4/1960 confirme qu'elle était de livrée ivoire, avec intérieur cuir vert, et était équipée d'un autoradio Becker Mexico optionnel. Ce document permet de conclure qu'à part la sellerie en cuir noir, cette voiture a conservé sa configuration et sa mécanique d'origine. Importée aux Pays Bas en 1999 alors qu'elle avait déjà bénéficié d'une remise en état de sa carrosserie et de sa sellerie, elle fut immatriculée 10 ans plus tard en France, avant qu'en 2011 le frère de l'actuelle propriétaire n'en fasse l'acquisition. Un important dossier comprenant des factures d'entretien depuis la fin des années 80, ainsi que différents manuels accompagne la voiture. Saine et en bel état d'usage, elle devra bénéficier d'une révision générale de principe, ayant peu servi ces derniers temps. Il s'agit d'une voiture rare sur le marché, caractérisée par une qualité de fabrication et de finition rare pour l'époque, ainsi que par sa fiabilité et sa facilité d'utilisation.

It's with the 1951 type 220 that Mercedes-Benz began the upgrade of its large models by offering a beautiful six-cylinder overhead camshaft engine. The 220 S of 1956 topped off this evolution by introducing an integrated frame and a pontoon bodywork. The 1958 version was then fitted with a Bosch fuel injection system, which enabled a significant torque increase at lower engine revolutions per minute and resulting in a more enjoyable driving experience. This model was then manufactured into a saloon, coupe and convertible, the latter being the most sought after.
This particular car was sold new in California. Its daten karte dates the car from 05/04/1960 and confirms that it was in ivory livery with green leather interior and fitted with an optional Becker Mexico car radio. Except for the black leather upholstery, the document concludes that this car has retained its original fitting and mechanical elements. Imported in Holland in 1999 whilst it had already benefited from a bodywork and upholstery restoration, it was registered in France 10 years later, before the current owner's brother acquired it in 2011. An important folder of invoices since the end of the 1980s and various manuals come with the car. Sound and in good used condition, the car should however benefit from a standard service throughout, since it has not been used recently. This is a rare car in today's market, with its manufacturing quality and its finish, rare for that era, as well as its reliability and ease of use.
