The 1960 edition of the United States Grand Prix marked a first and many lasts: it was the first World Championship Formula 1 race held in California and at Riverside (the only time); it was the last-ever Formula 1 World Championship race of the 2.5-Litre era; it would be the last time Lance Reventlow’s famous Scarabs would appear in a world championship event. In summary, it was a momentous race for many reasons.

Stirling Moss had recovered from his nasty crash at Spa, which caused him to miss a third of the season. Despite this, he still had a chance of securing 3rd in the Championship. To prove he was back on flying form, Moss stuck the Walker Lotus on pole. As the race started, it turned into a battle between Moss and Brabham before Brabham had a fiery pit stop and lost a lot of time. Ultimately, it was one of Moss’ finer wins, securing his 3rd place in the Championship and closing out one of motor racing’s greatest eras.
