THE FORD MUSTANG

Ford created a new class of car almost overnight with the introduction of the Mustang Sports Coupe part way through the 1964 season, catching the rest of the US auto industry off guard. The brainchild of Lee Iacocca - subsequent savior of the Chrysler Corporation – the Mustang is one of the most remarkable automotive success stories of modern times and arguably the pinnacle of his long career with Ford. Aimed at the affluent young, for whom a car was as much a lifestyle statement as means of transport, the Mustang succeeded brilliantly, achieving sales in excess of a quarter million by the end of '64. This remarkable debut was followed by a staggering 524,791 sales in 1965, earning Ford a fortune.

THE CAR OFFERED

This beautifully presented Mustang GT stands out both in terms of its great condition and desirable factory specification. A close look at the trim tag and chassis number of this striking Mustang Hardtop reveals that the car was completed at the San Jose based Ford plant on October 27th, in the first production year for the 1966 Mustang model-year. The car was finished just as it appears today, painted in the era-evoking Signal Flare Red exterior paint, with the interior clothed in Black with Black trim, including the rarely seen bench seat. The 2-Door Hardtop was optioned with the performance oriented 289ci V8 Engine, topped by a 4-barrel carburetor and 4-speed automatic C-4 transmission. As a GT, the new Mustang received the grill mounted light bar with fog lights, GT gas cap, styled steel wheels, twin-tip exhaust system, disc brakes at the front, a 3-spoke steering wheel and the Rally-Pack gauges adorning the dash area. The car also features air conditioning, a wonderful option considering the car was meant for the Los Angeles area when delivered new. Today, this sporting Mustang GT retains its desirable factory specification, and displays a wonderful patina, believed to be wearing the majority of its original paint. The engine compartment is in tidy condition, and very presentable. Offered here is a stunning example of the classic Pony car, ready to be enjoyed by its next caretaker.
