THE PLYMOUTH BARRACUDA
In early 1963 Chrysler engineers put a Hemi head on a modified raised-block 426 wedge to create a competitive NASCAR engine, the 426 Hemi. It was shaped by all the experience gained in years of competition, and best of all for Mopar enthusiasts, to be eligible for NASCAR competition it had to be available in a regular production street configuration. The Street Hemi incorporated many of the race version's performance components, including the crankshaft, connecting rods and cross-bolted main bearing caps. The milder grind camshaft used hydraulic lifters and lower rate springs, in an attempt to limit rpm and keep to the 425-limit imposed by management. With dual Carter AFB carburetors, it was the most awesome engine of a period when awesome engines were the rule. History has passed judgment on the Street Hemi, making it the most sought and valuable power plant of the Muscle Car era.
The new for 1970 'Cuda was now built to accommodate the legendary 426 cubic inch Hemi. At a 70 percent premium over Plymouths largest powertrain, the 440-cid 390-hp Six Barrel, the Hemi was only for serious race minded individuals. In addition to the enormous price tag, the race spec Hemi-powered 'Cudas were only built for two model years, 1970 and 1971 adding to the rarity and allure.
THE CAR OFFERED
This rare and nicely restored 1970 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda Hard Top was ordered with a raft of options. A relatively early production example built on November 10, 1969, according to the fender tag it was finished new in the current shade of Lime Light with a Black vinyl roof over Black vinyl interior. Fitted with the line-topping 426ci Hemi V8 mated to a A727 Torqueflite automatic, among the options boxes ticked where the Light Package (A01), Elastomeric Bumper Front (A21) -- which included body-colored racing mirrors, Super Performance Axle Package (A32) that added 9¾ Dana Axle with sure grip and a taller 4.10 gear ratio, a seven blade torque drive fan, 26 inch radiator with shroud, Hemi Suspension Handling Package, power front disc brakes, and Rallye Instrument Cluster (A62).
The early history of this 'Cuda is not recorded at the time of cataloging. By the late 1990s it was in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, including being shown at the Car Craft Magazine Nationals in St. Paul in 1999 and 2003. In the early 2000s it entered the collection of the late enthusiast and stunt aviator Scott Romuld of St. Paul, Minnesota. When not flying for the North American Flight Team 'T-6 Thunder', piloting a WWII-era T-6 Texan fighter plane, he piloted the next best thing—this Hemi-powered land rocket. The current owner acquired the car for his expansive collection in February of 2011and has retained the 'Cuda since.
Subject of an older restoration prior to the current ownership, it has been maintained as part of a large collection for the past 14 years. The engine number stamped on the bottom of the engine corresponds with the chassis number, indicating has retained its original engine. Documented by copy of its 1970 Fender Tag Decoder Report, it is a rare opportunity to acquire one of these earth-shaking machines. If you are in search of arguably the ultimate American muscle car for show or go, this is the Hemi 'Cuda for you.
