This significant trophy marked the final victory for Graham Hill in Formula 1 machinery. Formally known as the GEN/Daily Express BRDC Intenational Trophy, the race was held on 8 May 1971. The regulations allowed by Formula 1 and Formula 5000 cars to compete against each other, and was a round of the Formula 5000 European Championship.
Hill was entered in a works Brabham BT34, known as the “Lobster Claw” car for the innovative shape of its nose. The race was a major non-championship event with Formula 1 works teams such as Brabham, BRM, Lotus, Matra, McLaren, and Tyrrell all entering some of the greatest drivers of the time.
Held over two heats, Hill finished the first in 3rd behind Stewart and Rodriguez, before producing a masterful drive in the second race. Victory was assured to be his when he finished over a minute and a half on aggregate ahead of Peter Gethin in the factory entered McLaren M14A.
