1972 Alfa Romeo 1300 Junior Zagato

[ translate ]

Chassis No. AR1800688
Unveiled at the 51st Turin Motor Show in November 1969, the Alfa Romeo 1300 Junior Zagato was a limited-production two-seat coupe with wedge-shaped bodywork by Zagato of Milan. Designed by Ercole Spada, it broke from the rounded styling of the era with sharp edges, clean surfaces, a distinctive Kamm-tail, and transparent plastic panels flanking the Alfa grille. Based on the Spider 1300 Junior platform, its shortened chassis was bodied with an aluminum hood. Power came from Alfa's 1,290 cc twin-cam four with twin-choke carburetors, producing 89 PS and enabling a 175 km/h top speed.
This 1300 Junior Zagato, chassis number AR1800688, is certified by the Centro Documentazione Alfa Romeo as having been produced on 16 February 1971 and delivered one week later, originally destined for Amsterdam. Factory records confirm the specification as Rosso over Skai Nero—colors the car retains to this day. Belgian registration followed in September 1972, and the original Certificat de Conformité issued by Alfa Romeo Benelux S.A. accompanies the car.
The car was acquired in October 1996 from Jacques Peirs of JAC Cars, Desselgem by Nicolas Willemot, a Belgian Alfa Romeo enthusiast who held the car for nearly two decades. It subsequently underwent a comprehensive restoration by specialist RSC Automobile of Lauwe between 2013 and 2015, encompassing the transmission, brakes, bodywork, and interior, with documented investment exceeding €23.000 including VAT. Concurrently, the now 2,000-cc twin-cam engine was overhauled by Motorenrevisie Marrecau. Period GTA-style inlet trumpets and 6- by 14-inch alloy wheels were also fitted during the restoration. Presently equipped with sports seats, lightweight door cards, and a roll cage, the original seats, door cards, and a small selection of spare parts accompany the car.
The car carries current Belgian Oldtimer registration and passed its most recent inspection in June 2024, with the certificate valid through June 2029. An extensive file of original documents accompanies the car, including its history certificate issued by the Museo Storico Alfa Romeo. Driven recently by a Broad Arrow Specialist, the Junior Zagato is noted to drive incredibly well; the 2.0-liter engine's additional displacement immediately apparent and wholly welcome—and is, in every sense, ready to be enjoyed.
