1972 BMW 3.0 S
Chassis No. 3152453
BMW returned to six-cylinder power at the top of its sedan range in 1968 with the 2500 and 2800, expanding the lineup in 1971 with the larger-engined 3.0 S and 3.0 Si. Powered by the M30 straight-six—a chain-driven single-overhead-camshaft unit producing 180 PS—the 3.0 S combined genuine executive refinement with a top speed approaching 210 km/h. All-independent suspension, servo-assisted all-disc brakes, and available automatic transmission made it among the most successful grand touring saloons of its era.
This particular example, chassis 3152453, must rank among the finest unrestored survivors of its kind anywhere in the world. Registered on 26 July 1972 through automag Buchner + Linse, BMW's main Munich dealer on Landsberger Straße, it was supplied new to Alzmetall Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik u. Gießerei—the machine tool company of Harald Friedrich, whose factory was located in Traunreut in Upper Bavaria. Finished in Blau Metallic and specified with automatic transmission, the car was placed in long-term private storage essentially from the point of delivery. The odometer today shows just 32 kilometers from new.
The Fahrzeugbrief, stamped by the Munich registration authority on 26 July 1972, carries no subsequent ownership entries whatsoever. Accompanying the car are its original service booklet, European service station directory, owner's handbook, and a letter from Buchner + Linse dated 18 August 1972 formally delivering the title to Harald Friedrich. For the collector of time-capsule-like specimens, chassis 3152453 would be an exceptional candidate for Preservation Class judging at BMW gatherings, where originality and documented history of this caliber are without peer.
