THE MOTORCAR OFFERED

Even by today's standards, the SM must be considered a landmark in automotive design. Its sleek and innovative chassis featured self-leveling hydro-pneumatic suspension, power-assisted disc brakes, mounted inboard at the front to reduce un-sprung weight, and managed by an automatic hydraulic pressure bias that keeps the car level, even under hard braking) and a strong Maserati V6 engine driving the front wheels through a five-speed transmission. The SM was elegant, exclusive, and very fast.

As one reviewer commented, "The SM was essentially meant to be a Grand Touring version of the four-door DS while doubling as a platform for Citroën's newest advancements. Penned by Citroën's own head of design, Robert Opron, the overall profile closely mirrors the DS's teardrop canopy with quarter panels covering the rear wheels, but features a Kamm tail assisting in a drag coefficient of just .26", astonishingly low for that period, and a figure that almost no other road car can match even today. He went on to write, "...in its time, it was the fastest front-wheel- drive automobile the world had ever seen boasting a top speed of 140 mph." Over five years, almost 13,000 units were built, of which only 2,400 were sold in the U.S. It was quick to impress the automotive press and was the first non-American car to be named Car of the Year by Motor Trend magazine.

Presented in elegant Metallic Brown with a brown leather interior, this well-restored SM from a private collection is equipped with a Borg-Warner automatic transmission, power windows, variable-assist power steering, air conditioning, quad headlights, steel wheels with stainless trim, rear fender skirts, an entertainment system, a single-spoke steering wheel, Jaeger dashboard clock, a jack, and a full-size spare tire. Its odometer currently displays a mere 37,249 miles.
