1974 PEUGEOT 504 coupé

[ translate ]

Pininfarina coachwork
Major mechanical overhaul
140,000km recorded

Chassis N° 3092840
French registration (normal)

For Peugeot, saloon-derived coupés and cabriolets have been a traditional part of the range. After the 203 and 403 cabriolets, for the 404 the company called in Pininfarina, who created a completely different body from that of the saloon. With the 504 of 1968 Sochaux stuck to the same recipe and the famous styling house duly transformed a sober four-door saloon into an elegant coupé worthy of a prestigious Italian marque. The looks would evolve only in detail during the car's life, and without ever losing the elegance of the original design. To achieve the desired result the engineers shortened the wheelbase by 19cm (7.5in) while widening the rear track by 5cm (2in). The overall length of the coupé and cabriolet was 13cm (5.1in) down on that of the saloon, but the cars weighed more, because of the extra strengthening the body required. Produced from 1969 until 1983, these Peugeots have since become something of a legend, and offer perfect reliability married to a seductive ease of driving.

The 504 coupé offered here is a 1974 four-cylinder model with the 104bhp 2-litre engine. In a metallic silver-green, it is in good original condition. The paintwork would appear to be largely the original and still holds a good shine; the same goes for the chestnut-brown velour upholstery, which remains tidy and taut. The car was bought by its current owner in 2016 and much work has been carried out to put it in good order. One bill shows that the engine was comprehensively overhauled, along with the complete braking system. At the same time some elements of the coachwork were repainted. Today, with a modest 140,000km (87,000 miles) on the clock, the Peugeot is mechanically perfect and ready to to take to the road. It drives well, with excellent engine refinement and a slick gearchange. At the 2018 Paris motor show Peugeot created shockwaves when it showed the E-Legend concept car, with lines recalling those of the 504 coupé. It was a beauty, and an immediate success. At such a moment, with the manufacturer reconnecting with its past as a builder of elegant coupés, now has to be the time to buy a fine example of the real thing.
